Air Freight Chargeable Weight Explained: Actual vs Volumetric Weight

Introduction

A carton can be light on a scale and still take up valuable aircraft space. That is why air freight is commonly priced using chargeable weight rather than actual weight alone. Understanding the calculation helps importers estimate costs before the final warehouse measurement.

The two weights: Actual weight is the physical gross weight of the packed cargo

Actual weight is the physical gross weight of the packed cargo. Volumetric weight estimates the space the shipment occupies. The chargeable weight is generally the higher of the two, subject to the selected airline or service's rules. Gross weight should include the packaging that travels with the shipment.

A worked example: Imagine one carton measures 60 × 50 × 40 cm and weighs 18 kg

Imagine one carton measures 60 × 50 × 40 cm and weighs 18 kg. Using a divisor of 6,000, its volumetric weight is 60 × 50 × 40 ÷ 6,000 = 20 kg. The chargeable weight would therefore be 20 kg under that rule, not 18 kg. If the same carton were more compact, the actual weight might become the chargeable figure.

Why warehouse measurements matter: Suppliers sometimes provide product dimensions rather than packed-ca

Suppliers sometimes provide product dimensions rather than packed-carton dimensions. Cartons may also change after protective materials, pallets or outer packaging are added. A few centimetres can affect the result, especially across multiple cartons. Ask the warehouse to confirm the final dimensions and gross weight before approving the freight amount.

How to reduce avoidable cost: Use packaging that protects the goods without leaving unnecessary em

Use packaging that protects the goods without leaving unnecessary empty space. Keep cartons regular where possible, avoid oversized outer boxes and ask the supplier to consolidate compatible items. Do not compress or remove protection if doing so risks damage. For a multi-carton shipment, ask whether the rate is calculated per piece or on the shipment total, and request the measurement record.
